The NLADA Racial Equity Institute – Diversity Equity & Inclusion (REI-DEI) Fellowship is a 6-month training institute designed to introduce and equip fellows with the core competencies on racial equity required to launch and implement DEI initiatives within their organizations and beyond. This Fellowship will bring together the diverse groups within the NLADA community, which include the defender, civil, client/impacted community, and private sector, and focus on how these groups can collaborate to accelerate racial equity within the law.

The REI DEI Fellowship will cover, at a minimum, the following topics:

  • History of Racism and Other Forms of Oppression: Key Terms & Concepts
  • Talking About Race and Difference
  • Culture Change
  • Launching and Implementing DEI Initiatives
  • Building and Maintaining a Collaborative Space

It aims to foster a balanced, collaborative learning experience that breaks down the silos between the various communities so that all of us can work together toward equity and inclusion. Fellows will include defenders, civil legal aid attorneys, clients/impacted community, and attorneys in the private sector that seek to launch, develop, or refine the use of DEI strategies to build a more equitable workplace or community. We will prioritize members of the BIPOC communities who apply for the program because one of our goals is to offer training and create a leadership pipeline for diverse NLADA community members.

The time commitment for REI-DEI Fellows is approximately 3-4 hours per month. Fellows are required to complete one-hour learning modules and attend ninety (90) minute monthly group sessions from October 2024 to April 2025. REI-DEI Fellows will watch pre-recorded video modules on their own time and attend virtual monthly leadership sessions, which include substantive learning, small group discussions, and coaching led by a faculty of DEI and racial equity experts.
